A spring evening view

On a fine mainly sunny evening nine people took part in the first evening walk of the year. Starting from the Wellington street car park in Clayton the group went down to the main Sparth Road/Whalley Road junction and crossed over to walk through the woods, now in full leaf, to Bell Lane We passed the graveyard of the old St. Mary’s Church (which closed in 1959) and crossed Burnley Road to continue the walk along the canal. We saw Bluebells, Forget-me-nots, Buttercups and Cow Parsley in the hedgerows and Beech trees planted to commemorate a 50th Birthday. On to the canal past the swing bridge to the gate leading to a path through the fields to the farm and buildings heading back to Burnley Road. As we were going over the fields three people joined us as they were unsure how to continue (they left us when we reached the road.) After following the track past the farm we reached the main road and turned right towards Syke Side.

The pleasant track to the left carried on passing Lower Moor Side with very attractive cottages and along the lane which can be very muddy (but not tonight) until we joined the road leading to the houses at Red House Farm. One house has a window made with jam jars. From there the walk led us along Mill Lane until we were back at Harwood Bar. We crossed the road and turned left passing the houses and on to the path through the woods coming out on Heys Lane,we then walked via a footpath from Alan Ramsbottom Way past playing fields to the path back to Clayton. (This path is known as the switch back.) From the bottom of Lower Barnes Street we went up the cobbled path by the big house (Stone Brow House) and continued past houses and the back of bungalows to Sparth Road and Mercer Park. Then back through the park to the starting point. During the walk we saw Blossom on the Hawthorns and Rowan trees. Laburnums vibrant yellow in the gardens , Swallows swooping low over the fields in search of insects and even a Cow taking a walk along the lane with her calf by her side. An enjoyable walk of about 2 ¼ hours and still time for a drink for those who wanted one!
