Autumnal colours

A small group of five set out from the car park at Hurst Green on this blustery autumn morning. Walking through Mill Wood over a carpet of freshly fallen leaves we crossed the stream and followed the path past Greengore to join the road, before cutting back to Intack and across fields to skirt Cutler’s Hill. From there we continued along the edge of the woods, cutting through them to pick up the path leading to the B6243. Crossing the road we took the track opposite, through the farm and continued down to Stydd Manor. It was only 11.30 am when we arrived at Stydd Church but our body clocks were still set on British summertime so we were ready for an early lunch, sitting in the churchyard.

It was lucky that we lunched early as soon afterwards, as we reached the River Ribble at Ribchester Bridge we had the first of a number of showers. We stopped to put on waterproofs before crossing the bridge and turning left for a short walk along Ribchester Road past the Lancashire showground. We then turned left into Marles Wood and followed the riverside path to the footbridge at Trough House. The path gave us excellent views of the river in full flow.
After crossing the footbridge and taking the track to Hurst Green the heavens really opened – but not for long and it was dry, with even a glimpse of sunshine by the time we entered the village. As is customary we ended our walk with a pint of Lancashire Blonde in the Bayley Arms.
