We couldn’t have asked for a better day as 12 of us set off from New Bridge, Sedbergh to explore the fells and dales.

We started with a gentle stroll along the banks of the River Rawthey to Straight Bridge, before walking up to Ghyll Farm and, via Castlehaw, to Settlebeck Gill for the steep ascent to the summit of Winder (473m). We paused to admire the view and take on sustenance at the boundary of the open access land, before continuing to the summit for lunch. Although a little hazy, the 360° views were spectacular and the weather so mild we could easily have stayed all afternoon lazing in the spring sunshine.

However we dragged ourselves away to descend on the bridleway to Height of Winder, where we took field paths to the Lune Viaduct. Walking under the viaduct we followed the Dales Way along the banks of the River Lune to Lincoln’s Inn Bridge. The plan was to continue to follow the Dales Way to The Oaks, but I took a wrong path which led us to discover Killington Nature Reserve on the banks of the River Lune.

After a pleasant stroll along an excellent path we were able to take a footpath to The Oaks and pick up the Dales Way again. We continued along this well marked path to join the River Rawthey and follow it as far as Birks House. From there we took the footpath into the village of Sedbergh, passing the sports fields and buildings of Sedbergh School, for a welcome pint in The Bull.
