Stages 1 to 7


SECTION ONE

From the B6234 at the top of Stanhill Village (SD723277) take the track downhill keeping wall on left. Cross stream at end of track, turn right up the lane to Magnoll's Farm.

Straight on along tarmac road, cross A677, continue up lane to Four Lane Ends (SD718262). Cross B6231, continue up lane, directly after Sough Pits Farm on right, take gate onto track.

Follow track until it peters out and carry straight on to go through stile, turn left through another stile and head southwards with wall on left through two more stiles on to A6177 (formerly B6232).

Cross the Road, turn right for approx. 25metres and take stile next to gate. Follow wall on left to go through stile, straight on to emerge on road. Cross the road, turn left to enter Belthorn. Turn right down lane between ends of houses (signposted Belthorn Road).



SECTION TWO

Carry on down lane to stone steps on left (SD715247), go up steps, over stile, to follow fence on left. Continue along line of travel, through fence, to go straight across next field keeping stone wall on left, through gate to arrive at Bankfold.

At end of first block of buildings on right, go down lane, past two farms on right to reach rough track in valley. Turn left along track, go over bridge and continue until track turns sharp left with reservoir embankment ahead.

Ignore stile in front and turn right uphill following fence on left, over stile and continuing to stile in front of farm at top of hill. Through stile, turn left round end of house and cross farmyard to leave by farm track ahead. Follow track, past a building, to go through gate on left (SD719233) into a sunken green lane, on over first fence, ascend right hand bank and follow it around field through gate into farmyard.

Cross farmyard and follow lane to tarmac road, the chapel should be on your left (SD 726228). Cross road to go on along farm track, meeting Broadhead Road after 1km. Turn right along road for about 100metres. At metal gate on left cross stile and follow track in easterly direction past a stone post on your right. The track crosses the moor and descends to a wooden gate. Go through gate, turn right and head east down the field to a ruin (SD745224). At ruin, where you meet another path, turn right, crossing a gully with stone steps. Proceed with woods on left, then down to the bottom of the hill to meet another path and turn right. At stream, go across footbridge and turn right through woodland. At the next stream turn right down steps to cross footbridge and continue. At the next junction in the path, continue straight on up the valley with a stream to your right.

Above the woodland, turn right going uphill alongside fence and collapsed wall. Climbing out of the valley on its left side you will reach a fence with a stile. Do NOT cross the stile, but bear right keeping fence to your left and valley to your right. At fork in path keep left, proceed to fence, cross stile and continue across moor to wall. Turn right and continue until you come to a stile on your left at the foot of Hog Law Pike (SD748214). Cross stile and go downhill to far corner of field, through gate and past farm buildings to Broadhead Road. Turn left and proceed 200m to bend in road (SD747207). Turn left off road, up a narrow farm road. Where farm road bends to the left, bear right over fence and uphill over stiles, with fence and wall on your left.

Cross the wall at the top left corner of field, go straight on across moor to a stone wall. Continue with wall on right and go through gap to ruin - Causeway End (SD756210).



SECTION THREE

Bearing very slightly right, go down to bottom corner of field, through the wall and make for bottom left hand corner of the field and trees to a ruin (SD759211). Bear left, maintain this contour and make for hawthorn and wall in front.

Go straight ahead along top of bank to next ruin. This is Rushy Leach. Pass Rushy Leach and at top of next wall bear slightly right and make for right hand corner of wall in front to stile. Go over stile into quarry, take enclosed path which forks left to far side of quarry. After leaving enclosed path, turn left and follow track to derelict stone chimney. Turn right dropping down hill towards Ogden Reservoir, go through gap in wall and turn left to drop more steeply to reservoir. At foot of slope where path meets stream, turn right (east) along side of reservoir. Go past reservoir skirting tunnel under old tramway, cross stile into field and turn left.

Follow fence on left over footbridge to stile in corner, go up field to go through gate, cross the road (A6177) 150m east of public house to go up lane ahead to Leys End Farm (SD769229).

On leaving the farmyard look for a gate on the left leading into a field and turn right making for the spoil heaps in top right hand corner of field.

Please note: Do not go straight up field from farmyard. Take the good track left through wall, turn right up next field, past Clod Farm on left. Keep fence on left to go over stile in front and keeping fence on right make for track at wall corner.

Turn right past Windy Harbour Farm (SD772234). Straight on along path which becomes a walled track, at gate go through gap in wall on left (ignore stile on right) and follow wall to next stile.

Go through stile keeping wire fence on right, do not drop down to the farm, go over next stile to Higher Swineherd Lowe Farm. Through farmyard and follow track to next building. turn right through farmyard (SD775242), bear slightly left heading for stile in wall onto farm track, go over stile and turn left towards farm. At farm turn left into front of house then right along end, go over stile and next field to Coldwells.

Cross front of farmhouse onto farm track to main road (A677). Go straight across road and up the lane to farm, in farmyard turn left past the house to stile in wall in front. Go over stile, turn right down to gate by gap in houses, through gate, cross the road and turn right. After a few yards take path down to cross the A56 dual carriageway with great care.

Follow the path up the other side to go over a stile, continue over hill along centre of field to stile in wall, bear left to stile onto road (SD786251). Cross the road (A680), through the wall opposite and down steps to Winfields car park at Acre. If you're ready for a break now, Winfields does have a restaurant.



SECTION FOUR

Bear left across car park to go up lane leading to cottages. Turn right in front of cottages onto metalled road and turn left (north). Follow to the hamlet of Stonefold.

Continue through Stonefold to a water pumping house on your right, take track which forks left (SD788262). Follow track for approximately 2kms to large triangular junction of paths (SD786280). Take track that forks off to right, after 500 metres there is a stile on right (SD787284).

Head east through stile to follow reservoir wall on left to May Road Well (SD793284). Take stile in wall on left to follow a poorly defined path across moorland to waterfall (SD786292). Turn sharp right at waterfall and follow a well defined path over the top quarry, then bearing left / north (SD789294) to descend to bottom quarry (Hameldon Scouts).

Follow road through quarry in direction of derelict stone building, when road bears right, turn left at entrance to landfill site (SD794301). Head for stile in fence of fir plantation, go over stile to follow faint path through trees to go over a stile into a field. Cross the field to Miste Farm and follow track to Burnley Road (A679). Cross the road to go down farm track past a cottage on left to Sellars Fold Farm.

Pass through gate to right of farmhouse, turn left behind house to go through small wrought iron gate then over stile in corner of yard into field. Go down field keeping hedge on left to go over stile on left into plantation. Follow path through trees to go over footbridge and climb up to picnic site and car park at Childers Green (SD786308)



SECTION FIVE

On leaving picnic site, take path opposite and after 30 metres bear left through woods. Go over stile that comes into view on left and proceed with fence on right to where fence bends to right, to go over stile into woods. Turn left and continue through woods to leave by stile in left hand corner.

Continue along by side of railway keeping wall on right until you arrive at a stile. Go over stile and carefully cross the railway line to go over stile and turn right. follow path under motorway, turn left parallel with motorway, and after a few yards go over stile into a large field. Follow a faint track to leave field by stile leading onto lane to Shuttleworth House.

At farm buildings turn right along lane. Cross canal bridge and turn immediately right over stile and right again to go under same bridge (No.120) following towpath. Go under new road bridge (No.119A) and turn right just before the next bridge (No.119), cross stile and walk away from canal along grassy track to gate.

If walking Canal Clog you will join the route here.

Cross stile to join metalled track and continue straight on passing Shuttleworth Hall (SD783322) on your left. Go over stile between farm buildings into field, bear left across field, over another stile and proceed to corner of next field. Cross stile to join farm track. Go downhill until track turns to the right to a stream.

Cross wooden footbridge over stream, over stile and proceed along foot of slope below industrial estate keeping stream on your right. Continue straight on over stile through gate onto lane which takes you past cottages and old mill to emerge onto the A678. Cross the road and turn right over Altham Bridge (SD774330) to take a stile and stone steps down onto riverbank. Follow river to go over a stile, then a footbridge and another stile to a point where the river takes aleft turn (SD767335). Bear right, heading for left hand edge of Gooseleach Wood, to go over stile approx. 10 metres to right of gate. (NB This area may be boggy).

Head up the field, keeping the woods on right, to go through opening in dismantled railway to enter field beyond. Follow fence on left to top corner, go through opening to join fence on right. Bear very slightly left uphill to go over a stile, cross the field to gate on right of mill. Follow lane to road (A671) at Read (SD766345). Here, turn left and after 50 metres take George Lane on your right uphill to the 'T' junction. Turn left here to go down lane and after a short time take the left hand fork signposted 'Private Road Public Footpath'. Follow this track to go between newly built stone houses and onto main drive veering to left, past Read Hall (SD757349), veering left to go down to the gate house and onto main road (A671).

Cross the road to take track opposite, passing Cock Wood on the right to emerge onto main road (A680) at Cock Bridge (SD745341).



SECTION SIX

Cross the road, turn left uphill and just below cottages go through stile into a field. continue along path that leads gradually downhill to banks of River Calder. Carry on along the riverbank to cross footbridge over stream and go uphill to go over stile, continuing along the path which drops down some steps to a flag bridge (SD738344). Follow path round the hill to go through a stile and continue up to apoint where there are two stiles (SD735347).

Taking the one on the left, head uphill to emerge onto the lane. Go directly across lane to enter field and continue to stile in top right corner, over stile and bear slightly right to stile onto road. Turn left uphill to sharp left turn in road, do not follow road but go straight on. After a few yards go left into field and bearing slightly right across the field over small rise to stile onto road. Go over stile on opposite side and follow wall to stile, after which you turn left up the road (Moor Road) for 600 metres.

About 75 metres after the gateway of Miles Hill Farm take stile on left and bear slightly right to cross the remains of two stone walls. As you go downhill make for stile, approximately 30 metres up from fence in front, which leads into a plantation (stile is hidden behind wall). In the plantation, bear left to go over stile into field, bear slightly right to go over another stile and follow fence to derelict farm on left, Fearly Hey (SD725342).

Follow sunken track to gate (Do not go through) but take the path on the right keeping wire fence on the left. Follow this path along the hillside, through some gorse bushes, continuing across fields to pass ruins of farm on left. Keeping wall on left, proceed to cross a gully at end of wall and go over a field to meet a track and wall. Turn right up the track to go through first gate on left heading onto another track. On your left is Dean Clough Reservoir.

Follow this track until it joins the road (SD706326), turn left (south) along the road to go over next stile on right. cross the field to go over stile in fence next to a stone wall. Keeping the wall on the left, proceed to the road at Parsonage Reservoir (SD701322).



SECTION SEVEN

Turn right along the road, left at junction. Approximately 500 metres later take a gate on left leading south into a field below reservoir embankment. Going downhill with wall on left, cross a stream and continue up other side with stream on left. Proceed up to go over stile, bear slightly right to another stile before you reach Middle Mickle Hey farm.

Go over this stile and pass to the right of the farm. Go through gate behind the farm onto a grassy track around the field to go over stile and bridge. Keeping the wall on left, continue to the road. Cross the road diagonally right to go through gate. Follow grassy track for a few yards then turn right, downhill, to go through the remains of a stone stile.

Continue downhill to go through another stile (SD705306), turn left along the path and over three more stiles to join a farm track, past Lower Cunliffe Farm on the left, to continue over the canal bridge (Cut Bridge No.107).

If walking Canal Clog you will leave the route here

Follow the track past Cut Farm and on to road (A678). Cross over, turn right along road to take a left turn just after the railway bridge. Follow this farm road over the motorway, past Willis Farm on right to go over stile just before Cowhill Fold.

Go across the field to go through another stile, bear left, through another stile and follow fence on right. Continue across the field following farm track, then turn right up to main road (A679) past Wolfenden Farm (SD725284). Cross the road to go over stile opposite. Head straight uphill with fence and wall on right.

Just over the top of the hill at Higher Stanhill go through a stile in wall on right, continue downhill with wall on left to go over stile at the bottom. Turn right and after a few yards, turn left down the lane and onto Stanhill Lane (B6234), turn right uphill back to starting point.
