Map Library Up and Running

The Hyndburn Group Committee has decided to set up a map and guidebook library. It is for the benefit of Hyndburn Group Members ONLY and can be used for either leading Group Walks or having a Walking Holiday following one of the many long distance routes that are available. Obviously, the Group could not possibly afford to buy every map and guide book for every walk, so to get the ball rolling we have bought three maps. These are:

  • Explorer OL 21 South Pennines
  • Explorer OL41 Forest of Bowland & Ribblesdale
  • Explorer 287 West Pennine Moors
They are all Laminated maps so that longetivity of life can be attained. A small number of route guides were already in the groups possession and a bibliography is available on request. Please also note that a deposit and small charge (for any postage) will be applied. If anybody has any maps or guidebooks they would like to donate to the library then please feel free to do so.

Committee Officer Steps Down

The Hyndburn Group is currently in need of a Footpath Officer after John Williams stepped down in April due to increasing personal commitments. A big thank-you goes out to John for his hard work in a role he undertook as a 'stop-gap' that has lasted eighteen months! Mr Norman Jeffery is going to continue in his role as an aide to the new Footpath Officer, whoever you may be!!

Silver Jubilee Ramble Party

This walk will be held on Sunday the First of September 2002. The day will commence with a 4/5 mile walk from the Hyndburn Bridge at 1 o'clock and will be followed by potato pie at the pub. Please note that you MUST return the slip in Area News by the required date to be eligible for the potato pie.

Two more walks have been added to the programme for the following weekend. On Saturday 7th, meet at Plantation Street at 10am for a 7/8 mile walk to be led by Norman and Jean Jeffery. Then on Sunday the 8th, Brenda Whelan and Cath Pilling will lead a 15 mile walk. Meet 8.30am at Plantation Street.

Silver Jubilee Photo Competition

As you will no doubt be aware this competition is now up and running. The rules are simple:
The photo must have been taken on a walk on the Hyndburn Group programme between January the 1st and September the 30th.
When submitting your entry include with it your name, membership number, address, contact phone number and details of the walk it was taken on. A guest judge will choose the winner with the prize being donated by the Fell & Mountain Shop in Accrington.

DEAN CONQUERS PENDLE
On Easter Saturday, Dean Hall led a small group on a 7½ mile walk over Pendle Hill. What was special about it was that it was the first time he had led a walk for the Hyndburn Group - at the tender age of 8.

Dean said “ At first I felt really nervous as I had not led a walk before. Even though my dad and I had been over the route a few days earlier (he only had to put me back on the right path twice!), it was not until we reached the top of Pendle Hill that I felt happy leading.”
“I really enjoyed it on the day and and at the end of the walk my dad gave me a certificate to remember my big day. Everybody clapped.”
“I would like to thank those of you who turned up and I hope my next walk in July is just as good.”

Deans' next walk was from Belmont to Winter Hill on July 14th and there will be a report by Dean in the next issue.

42 MILES, 6 PEOPLE, 3 DAYS AND A FOOTBALL MATCH!
At the beginning of June, 6 hardy souls set off on a walk from Oakwell Hall, nr.Birstall in South Yorkshire to Gawthorpe Hall, nr.Padiham in East Lancashire. These two grand buildings are the start and finish points of the Brontë Way.

Leaving Oakwell Hall in the glorious sunshine, we headed south through Gomersal towards the village of Liversedge. Here is Clough House where the first two Brontë children, Maria and Elizabeth, were born. From here we turned due west to cross a footbridge over the M62 motorway before turning north west to eventually arrive at Clayton Heights. From here it was just 1½ miles to Thornton. This is the village where perhaps the most well-known Brontës were born. Charlotte in 1816, Branwell in 1817, Emily in 1818 and Anne in 1820.

Day two saw us leaving Thornton knowing our target for the day was Wycollar. Striding out we were quickly into a steady pace as we headed for Oxenhope. Upon reaching the steam railway we heard some dramatic news. England had taken the lead against Sweden! Hurrah!! We arrived at Haworth for lunch, where a few of us sought out a public house where we could imbibe some local brew (and maybe even catch a bit of football on a tv), while the others had a look round the village. What could I possibly tell you that you didn't already know about this place?!. Leaving Howarth behind us we were soon dodging the tourists on our way to Brontë Bridge and it was but a brief couple of hours before Wycollar marked the end of the day.

Day Three saw us making our way from Wycollar to the walks end via Boulsworth Hill and Burnley. The only time the heaven's opened during all three days came in the final two hours of walking - but not even the steady rain could spoil our joyous march up to the front of Gawthorpe Hall at the end of an unforgettable weekend.

The walkers start out from Oakwell Hall.
